92 XJS rear shock absorber breaking

Default 92 XJS rear shock absorber breaking

I replaced a rear shock absorber that was broken and causing a clunking sound. Now my replacement shock is broken. Whats wrong? Any ideas?

Where is it broken, exactly?

My first thought is that something is the rear suspension is bent and/or severely out-of-position and placing stress on the shock.

Did you replace the bushings? I just changed my 94's upper rears out because of a car- shaking thump from the rear. Turned out to the the upper shock bushings

Did you miss out the spacer tube when mounting the top eye of the shock? Item 6 in this diagram:
