Default Air Intake Elbow

I need to replace my intake elbow on my 1996 XJS. The part has been superseded by something looking extremely similar except it has this additional plastic box attached by a tube.

I purchased part number NBC3542CA. Does anyone know what the extra box does? If you google the part number and click images, it'll come right up.

Thanks.

I think it's there for noise control. I've seen similar on ther cars. The extra chamber alters/absorbs resonances in the airflow. Something like that. I don't know the precise terminology and it's too early to try faking it

It's called a Helmholtz resonance chamber or more commonly known as a 'drone eliminator'. These devices are placed in a specific place and have a specific volume to eliminate a specific tone or sound that the engineers considered objectionable.

So you're telling me that by installing this elbow it's actually an upgrade!

Woo-hoo!

Thanks.

With these old car I am glad to have to put up with a drone. At least that means the engine is running.

Vee,

EBC9352, (the part fitted to XJSs) has not been superseded to NBC3542CA. EBC9352 was fitted up until the very last XJS. It's just that EBC9352 isn't available any more. NBC3542CA is the part number that was always fitted to the x300 saloons with the AJ16 engine. I don't know why they used that part. Maybe it was something to do with wanting the saloons to be more refined and quieter?

If it's important to have the correct part, I'm sure it wouldn't be difficult to find a used item. Alternatively, I think you you could buy EAC9552, the same elbow used on the AJ6 engine, and remove the sensor. It's still available new for about £30 from Jaguar.
