Another exhaust question...
Hey guys,
I've decided on what exhaust my car will be getting, and will be starting with the downpipes...
The downpipes are fitted via a compression ring to the manifolds. As they aren't the easiest parts to access when the engine is in place, I wanted to quickly ask: would it be clever to use some exhaust paste/sealer between both parts to make sure that gas tight is gas tight? Not that I have to fiddle around in these areas again...
Or are the gasket rings enough?
Cheers

Not sure what MY you are driving (you really should add a signature line so no one else will ever ask you again), but in my experience, the crush gaskets seem to work well enough. Of course, I can't see how adding some paste would hurt. It would only make for a messier reinstall should you have to get back in there again later in time.
Not the end of the world though.

Not experienced here. But, in my application, a flat gasket has performed well. Flat and clean manifold against flat and clean "down pipe" surface is leak free sans "goop".
I've never resorted to "Goops" here. Heat and PSI likely to defeat most "Goops", if not all.

My cars are all in my signature... With engine and year!? Odd...
Okay Carl, I'll do without... Should be okay as is then...
Permatex makes an exhaust sealant for just such joints. New olives good and tight should not leak, but Mine are. I'm pulling those joints for the third time ( didn't have new olives when I opened it first time ) and they are going to get the goop this FINAL time.
Greg, mine are Jag but my previous ones were original to the car and badly degraded. It could be I have a bit of them embedded in the manifold. I'll check for it when they come off.

I would add that each surface be true and clean. And care exercised in the torque down to keep the surfaces absolutely parallel.
In abundance of caution, when making the iron manifold to steel pipe joint in my lump, I used brass nuts, star washers and aluminum anti-seize. No leaks, and so far no need to open the joints. I used the option of flat gaskets over "olive" or as Yanks term them donuts.
Partial goof this AM. Thunder and lightning this morning at about 4. Coco not distressed, but fussed, his way!! Woof, woof!! great lungs and good pipes!!
Got chores done and Coco out and fed his kibble and chopped turkey.
Saw a bit of light. Saddled up quickly. Off to market in the Jeep. Ugh, missed the window, right in to the teeth of the shower. Pet store for Coco rations, market for mine. Imaginative lunch coming up. Canned soup over a slice or two of SF's famed sour dough bread. And, a side of avocado and tomato slices.... A dark brew to wash 'em down!!!
