Default Anyone have a head puller?

Does anyone on the forum have a head puller they would like to sell or rent? My dad just got an 89 that needs a head pulled.

Is this really a thing? Is it just a bracket for this particular head? Or is it over in the corner, along with my board stretcher??? Just curious?

I made 4 plates up as kirbys book. providing you come up square you will only need 2 and lots of studding.

When I used to work on these engines 'back-in-the-day' I used a 3 roller type stud extractor to remove any 'stuck' head studs.

I had to cut a few and drift them out of the head.

There are many ways to get the head off and many solution to a successful repair.

My dad is looking for the full plate type, worried the smaller pieces will end up warping the head. It already has some type of angle iron similar to rgp's setup which the previous owner/mechanic abandoned.

Removing the studs isn't really the worry, its separating the head from the block after 30 years of marriage.

89 Jacobra, yes this is a thing. The V12 rarely needs actual engine work so you may not have heard about it yet. The XK can similarly be difficult to get apart, you see alot of people sticking bottle jacks under the head to pop it loose...again with the possible warping.

I understand the cost of someone having to make these new, thus the $450 price tag on eBay, but was hoping someone was looking to just recoup part of that or rent it out since its likely a one time use tool for most people.

I made a solid plate head puller from a bit of 20mm steel plate and a couple of lengths of high tensile threaded rod, cost less than $50 and worked a treat.

Be careful removing the studs as you will almost certainly break at least one. If you break a long one then its an engine out job to fix it.
