Default Battery dead, boot locked

The battery died in all this cold and I can't get the boot open. I have a jump starter so I connected it to the Cigar lighter, thinking I would then be able to operate the Central locking but it just blew the Cigar lighter fuse. I need to open the boot to change the battery. How do I do that? Car is a 1990 XJ-S 3.6 5-speed, Right-hand drive (British spec) Hoping someone can help...

Use the key in boot lock and only turn it 90° so the key is vertical. The boot can then be opened.

Assuming you can’t do the key thing, there’s main power lugs on the firewall that are basically remote terminals for the battery. To figure out which of the several lugs is the hot one, track the starter cable back to the fire wall. If it had thin black wires, it’s a ground... you want to find the hot one. Should have a thick wire attached.

Thumbs up

Hi Warrjon. It worked! I had no idea it was a 3-position lock and always wondered how it worked, as I had tried it many times but it it didn't seem to do anything; nothing in the handbook.
Anyhow, many thanks! I'm very grateful, and I'm off to order a new battery. Cheers mate!

Hey Terrazen...

Can or will ya say a little more/a bit about the boot and the "central locking"? I also have a 1990 XJS convertible 5.3 and would love to be able to "pop" the boot without the key. I didn't know it was an option. Am I missing something on this car? I have seen nothing like that here.

I have to take the dive to try to straighten out the solenoids for the doors and such anyways. Part of the same system?

Actually - any any any advise on working and reworking the door solenoid operation would be MUCH appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Turn the key to sideways position, you can then push the latch and it will open without key.
