The gentleman I purchased my 1990 XJS Convertible from owns a paint shop. The poor XJS was parked too close to the paint bay and was often covered with over-spray. Here is what is looked like when I bought it;

After 2 days of rubbing compound, polish and wax it now looks like this;

It does look very nice but unfortunately the picture is a bit deceiving. The XJS was unloved for many years and there are many imperfections in the paint. The only solution is a new paint job but since this is going to be my daily driver it is ok for now. I will paint it after I get my '89 back on the road.

Right now I'm enjoying my "20-footer" black cat.

Some folks might look at that first picture and just think the car was dirty. Well, it was dirty but under that dirt was paint over spray. It was all over the car. I spent an entire day with rubbing compound and my buffer to get to paint off. The second day was spent in polishing and waxing.

The convertible top is completely rotten. I will replace it in the next few weeks.

The wheels look to be in really decent shape too, wire wheels being notoriously difficult to get clean / keep clean.

Depending on what may / may not be shown in the pictures, if there's any residual dirt / brake dust / grime etc on the inner edges of the spokes, inside of wheels etc.

I can HIGHLY recommend Sonax "FULL EFFECT" wheel cleaner or better still, Pinnacles version as seen here....

My father owned a body shop in my formative years, and I became the cut/buff guy by 15 years old. I start out with 2000 grit sandpaper. Then the compound, then the mirror glaze, to get most of those imperfections out. I went a little too far on two places, and plan on having them spot painted in. No wax until I do. Looks like a great transformation, and I can really appreciate the work that goes into a good detail job. Feel free to contact me about your top. This is a massive undertaking to say the least. I can warn you of what you need to be ready for.

Hi Safari,

I went to look at this very car! I live in Aurora CO and saw it on Craigslist, thought it was in pretty decent shape. Had to pass it up as the Suburban is currently needing some attention. It's what hauls the Jaguar around when kitty decides to break down.

You did some nice work there. And black is one of the hardest colors to work with, it hides nothing. Hopefully I might catch you driving around town when the weather is nice.

Huge transformation, looks great.

I just started the buffer routine on mine, and the body panels are looking great with 3M rubbing compound + orange cutting pad, followed by 3M polish (purple bottle, forgot the name) with blue polish pad.

I plan to finish with some carnauba wax.

On the door sills and brightwork, I was not able to get all the scratches out using the above technique. Any suggestions? I wet sanded a corner with 2000 grit, but that's not looking great either.
