Default Black Emblems

Were the original xjs emblems in the early 90s black? or has the chrome just worn off mine?

The rear "XJS" emblem is black plastic but the face is painted silver. The "JAGUAR" on the trunk lid is also painted silver.

My 1990 is a Collection Classic so it does not have the "V12" emblem. If it did it too would be painted silver on its face.

The Collection Classic hood Growler is gold. Other cars received the black growler.

You are correct. 20+ years of car washes and sun fading eventually wear away the silver paint.

Most of the XJS's I have seen so far have worn emblems. I repaint mine to bring them back to life.

The silver is fading slowly but surely on the emblems on my 89. It's on the list of things to fix, but right now that's a long list and those aren't very high up!

Interesting.

The "XJS" emblem on my 1990, 3.6 is so uniformly black I never realised it would have originally been silver. Also, the car does not have a "3.6" emblem on the opposite side. Somebody told me that Jaguar ran out of "3.6" emblems just before the 4.0 engine was introduced and so didn't fit anything on that side. Does that ring true to anyone or did the "3.6" just fall off at some stage?

Cheers,
LeeP

I'm with you. All the facelift jags I have ever seen have all had black emblems, so I always figured they were suppose to be that way. I figured it a design choice so they would match the black tail lights. I then noticed people selling chrome emblems on ebay and was confused. The black paint never lasted long. I recall in the 90s noticing black emblems on the trunks of the jags I would see. Maybe its American soap or something. :P

I used chrome furnace duct tape on the face of the letters and trimmed it with an exo knife. Has worked so far.

great idea. wish I saw this before purchasing a new pair on ebay for $50.

I would definitely clear coat over it and will last forever.
