Default Central Locking Module Fault? '96 XJS Facelift

Hi,

Can someone tell me where the central locking control module is on a Facelift XJS?

I have this odd issue, I unlock the car, get in and as I close the door the locks go crazy and the doors lock and unlock themselves for about 20 seconds and then stop.

If I move the internal locking lever it immediately moves back again and locks the door. After a few tried the issue is usually gone but I can only lock and unlock one door. The central locking stops working like it's a safety shut off.

Is there a relay that's bad for water ingress maybe, that controls this system? Or are there parts in the doors that can be susceptible to water. I'm afraid I have to park my car outside, no garage for me

Andrew,

It may not be the same issue as yours, but I had a slightly similar problem a few years ago where my drivers door sometimes wanted to unlock itself when I tried to lock it using the fob or internal lever. I decided that it might be to do with the contacts in the door lock not quite being activated correctly. I removed the door card and played with the adjustment rods to optimise the tension in them and the problem went away. Just an idea!

Good luck

Paul

Hi @ptjs1

Thanks for the reply, interesting I'll certainly have a look into this.

I have to fix another issue on the drivers door lock so when I do this I'll investigate and post some pictures of the repair job as well.

Difficult to explain in a few words but the rotating plate that moves the the door into locked mode is "wonky" and I think the rivet holding it in place is worn or maybe corroded. So most of the time it doesn't line up and I get trapped in the car! lol.

If what you say above is correct for my car maybe it's all linked together, I assumed that the door lock was purely mechanical but maybe it's linked into various other sensors too, interesting.

I'm not sure if it's possible to convert an old XJS lock into the facelift one, the only main difference I can see is the large plate holding the lock solenoid but I could be wrong but I didn't want to spend £100's of pounds getting a facelift door lock assembly from a supplier. I could only find one in the US and that was it.

That lock module is in the passengers footwell.

Take out the trim in front of the door, under the knee bolster. Once removed you’ll see a hole. It’s in there.

If I had a picture, I would attach it here.

Every once in awhile I have auto lock problems. Unplugging, then replugging that module in clears it up.
