Default Come on to the find the oil leak party

Okay, now that I moved on from my pieced together fuel injector line I was trying to locate the oil leak I have on the car (91 XJ-S V12). I don't currently have a jack I trust so was working by trying to get a camera under the car and in the engine bay. Reading on here I was hoping to find that the sender was leaking but it appears to be dry. The head gasket also doesn't seem to have any seepage or drips. I found the oil down by the Oil Filter, attached a couple of images. It's coming down from somewhere back side of the motor. Also, oil seems to stop/slow dripping if motor is off, so under pressure is when it's going. Any suggestions on where to try and look at next or do I have to get this guy up in the air to find it? Happy to take any pics if you want to see something.

Looks dry here

yep, drips

Example shot of area around head gasket, no drips

Well, interesting.

Read the sticky I have writen at the top.

BUT

At that area you have:

Camcover and the Notorious "D" seal. NOT under pressure as such, but the camcover is "flooded" with oil when the engine is running.
Oil feed pipe and associated banjo fitting. NOT a common leaker, and under pressure, so oil would FLOOD out of its the culprit. DO NOT, repeat, DO NOT simply reach in there and attempt to tighten that Banjo. You WILL strip the threads, an then its engine out to rectify.
Oil switches, mainly the smaller one, VERY common, and that oil tracks anywhere it wants.
Oil drain hoses, the 2 small suckers from the oil filter housing TO the Sandwich Plate topside.

Washing it down, getting it up in the air, run the engine while looking, and you will see it.

Thanks Grant, I read your sticky which helped me look at the oil switches. I know the head gasket was replaced in the last six months along with a new oil pan and gasket but I didn't do the work or have any experience with the shop that did. I'll keep digging around

We don't call those oil leaks.

They are critical parts of the "Automated Corrosion Prevention System".

You're very dedicated

Not me, though. A couple leaks like that I'd shrug off with a hearty chuckle and dismissive wave of my hand!

Cheers

I agree with Doug! But if you must, I think they look like sump gasket weeps plus oil migrating down the bolt threads. Take a look at this, it might help:

Incidentally, you could remove the air injection stuff from your car, if allowed, as it gives far better access to the top of the engine.

Hmm, thanks for the link Greg! I think I might try and seal the bolts and see if that stops it. I'll know more when I can get under the car fully.

I found my pretty substantial leak using a dye and a UV light.
my first time doing that, but it was simple, and worked well.
My oil was all over the lower front of the engine and under the car, and I was pretty worried it was the sandwich plate.
turns out to be the front main crankshaft seal, which I’m relieved about.
I’ll have the radiator out soon to get cleaned, and will do the seal then.
good luck with yours.
