Default Convertible Top Tension Wire

When I purchased my car it had no top. I put a new top on years ago with a DIY tension wire. I finally purchased an OEM tension wire.

I have an issue where it does pull down correctly on the sides. Now that I am replacing the wire I would like to remedy this. I believe they had a cut out in the canvas to keep the wire in place? Can someone check the to pon their xjs and let me know if there is a cut out?

Here is a photo of what Im dealing with (...car is being wet sanded after fresh paint in case your wondering):

It could be that the "lip" is bent down against the car, not allowing the tension cable to properly tuck the top under it. The tension wire actually passed through the top about there on my 89. If I remember correctly, I had to cut a small slit, and the cable went through the top as it got near its anchor points.

The lip appears ok.

I'm going to try cutting a couple slits in the problem area. I can always go back.

Hoodun,

Just to let you know that you've got the riveted plates on the hood corners on the wrong sides of the car. They should be fitted so that the curved bulge of the plate points towards, and just overlaps, the end of pleated roll on the bottom of the hood.

Thanks, I was wondering this when I was doing it and could not find a close up photo.

I am starting to think the wire is suppose to come out at that point before going into the car. So it is actually wire touching the lip and not wire over fabric.
