Well, that was way too much fun...two almost days to strip away the water pump and associated hoses. After experiencing severe backache, decided to remove the bonnet/hood which I should have done to start with
The fun staff was getting to all the water pump mounting bolts and the various j"Jubilee" clips. The water pump was in good condition but as I had already bought a replacement, I'm going ahead and fitting this. A new hose kit and thermostat were ordered from Jagbits. Expensive (compared to the Moss offering however they are closed at the moment). I took lots of photos as I dismantled in the hope that these will allow me to avoid a number of "re-works".
I had to replace the water pump on my 3.6 as the seal had gone on it. Leaks here get flung out by the fan and you will get a splatter line on the underside of the bonnet (hood). Standing next to the car with the bonnet open I could feel the spray on my face. Yours sounds more like a hose leak.
I would also recommend a Jag original for the big hose. I heard from a well experienced Jag specialist mechanic that he had one blow once and the cooling system empties very, very quickly in a cloud of steam behind the car.

Good luck,

It could be my description of rapid water loss, you refer to. I had B-hose rupture on the XJ40 doing 100 MPH on the motorway, and the cloud behind the car was a spectacular sight in the rear view mirror. I'm very glad I noticed it at once and not when instruments told me I had no more water...

Hi Leo,
No this was an XJS and the story told to me by the owner of a super-good, small Jag restoration garage in Maldon, Essex UK. I hope they and small independents like them survive this current mess.
