door lock - 1989 XJS
I just bought a 1989 Jag XJS coupe. I drove it home. Got out and closed the door. I don't remember locking anything. Now I can't get in. The doors are locked and the key will not unlock the doors. I did not get a key fob. Did 1989 Jags have key fobs? If not, how do I unlock the doors?
My door locks had a mind of there own. Long story short, I read somewhere on The Forum about the age of the battery causing the locks to act weird. My battery was about 7 years. "So far" the door locks are working correctly after battery replacement .BTW , I use a door/trunk key I don't believe my 91 conv came with a fob ' I bought the car in 97. It has a alarm system that has a fob, but I since disconnected the system, big PITA. Therefore no fob, just key.
No remote lock on these old Jags. The door key is not the same as the ignition key. These cars had that weird 1980's linked power door lock system. Locking or unlocking the driver's door would unlock the passenger door., if you hold it at the extreme turned position. Likewisw locking the door from inside. I don't like this system and would rather have manual locks. I'd try lubricating the inside of the lock mechanism on both sides . Stick the little straw on the WD 40 can into the key slot and gently try to work the key back and forth. How many keys did you receive with this car? I had a duplicate door lock key cut and it isn't exactly the same as the original. The "shaft" length is a little shorter and it won't work. Try one of the other door keys if you have one.
I got two ignition & two door/trunk keys. Never tried getting anything made. As said the alarm system, called Prestige was there when I bought the car. It has two fobs that turn on/off the alarm & lock/unlock doors & trunk. I pulled the fuses & haven't used it for years.
