egr sensor/ valve

I have a 1993 xjs convertible, 73k ,, the computer has the check engine light on,, the code is the egr sensor,, the car runs fine, will it hurt the car to run it with this sensor malfunctioning?? and what does it control,,,,

I would suspect there is a problem with the EGR itself or the vacuum solenoid. The sensor gauges whether or not the valve is functioning. I've never sold a sensor but lots of the other two. This recirculates the exhaust to insure a more complete burn and lower emissions.
