Electric to mech fuel pump on a lump
Hey guys ~ so my fuel pump just died. I have an '82 XJS with a Chevy 305 under the hood. Whoever did the V8 swap left the electric pump in place. I'm just wondering, can I swap in a mechanical pump instead of replacing the electric? Sounds like it would work fine, but I'm not sure if there's any hidden tricks about it...
Thanks in advance!
Thanks in advance!
Is the 305 carburetted or fuel injected?
A carb'd engine needs only 4-5 psi so an old style engine mounted mechanical pump is fine. An injected egnine needs much more, depending on the type of injection. I think the old throttle body injected V8s need about 15-20 psi and the tuned port injection models more like 50-60 psi.....just guesses on my part. It's been years since I messed around with 'em.
Cheers

Woohoo! That saves me about a hundred dollars. Plus it won't leave me stranded in a parking garage in downtown portland. Thanks doug! And warrjon, I like the junkyard idea. Back home they were all over, but where I live now I don't have very many good ones around.
