For a 1995 Jaguar XJS, replacing the A/C evaporator is a notoriously labor-intensive job because the unit is buried deep within the dashboard. You can expect to pay between $3,100 and $4,500 for a professional replacement at a specialized shop.
Cost Breakdown
The high price tag is almost entirely driven by the "dash-out" nature of the repair. CategoryEstimated CostDetailsLabor$1,600 – $2,400 Requires 10–20+ hours of work. Parts$200 – $2,100 Varies wildly between aftermarket and OEM. Recharge$250 – $380 Evacuating and refilling the refrigerant. Total$3,100 – $4,500Average estimates for the 1995 model.
Why do you think the evaporator needs to be replaced?

I know as it was diagnosed leaking but there is not many shops that wants to do it I have asked to couple for a quote but they tend to be very against it. I have now asked jaguar specialist in the area we will see the evaporator is not to expensive but I need to understand the labour hours some people say 8 some people say 12
If nobody else wants to help, try Classic Engineering in Waltham Cross. This is a big job labour-wise. Mine cost nealry 2000 quid twenty five years ago. The dash has to come out and so does the aircon unit, then all put back and regassed. Trouble is the XJS is undriveable without aircon in anything other than cold weather!

I found somebody and he is been quite honest too so I will get more work done to remove any leak
Try getting a quote from Ray at Surrey Jags, Tom at Tom Lenthall Ltd in Finchampstead, or go further north and talk to David Marks at David Marks Garages.

Good luck

I spoke to Tom lenthall thank you for the recommendation
I’ve just had the dash out of my ’89 XJS to investigate vacuum and electrics. Quite straight forward. Bigger job to remove the HVAC unit as water and A/c connections at firewall need detachment and trans tunnel panels removal required but all doable. Just takes time.
