I would make them as short as you can while still leaving about 1/4 to 1/2 an inch between the two fir tree metal bits each end of the hose. If anything in my view, the fuel rail is too high OEM. It is not unknown for the ferrules on the fuel rail front two hoses to hit the bonnet when the bonnet is shut.

dont forger there are two types,
the clamp type and the ferrule type with the retaining cups,
ensure you install as it was original, and dont put clamps on ferrules, it will bite through the pipe eventually on the ferrule barbs
