Default Fuel Sender and Gauge Erratic

Folks
My fuel gauge is erratic. Subjective impression is that it is more unreliable when starting up from cold and may read empty though I know the tank is near full. Then while I drive for a bit it starts to read correctly. Then sometimes while driving it might drop to empty for a few minutes and then goes back to correct reading such as 3/4 or full.
Looking at the XJS Help book it suggests early models (earlier than my 1992) had a problematic float that leaked and allowed fuel into the float but that this was fixed implying that I should not have that problem.
It suggests replacing with a superior Ford brand of float but implies later models than about 1987 it is not an issue.
Has anyone else had a randomly erratic gauge that usually but not always gives correct gas tank status?
It is disconcerting when the fuel gauge says Empty even if you are sure the tank is not empty.
Bill

PS I noted that in the XJS Help book you have to be careful - I was searching on the word Gauge but by accident discovered in some cases it was spelt Guage and so until I discovered that, I was missing those instances.

Change the float assembly; it's not a difficult job.
It would help if you put the car year/engine in your signature.

Jaguar did issue us a TSB in 1994 for tight float rod bushes. Your car is earlier but still something to consider.
