Default Erratic Fuel Gauge

On my 2002 XK8, when the fuel level drops below 3/4 full the gauge goes to empty and the reserve light comes on. I understand that this circuit is analog so it should be relatively easy to ring out. My problem is that I don't have the least idea where to start. Any help would be deeply appreciated!

If it always happens at the same gas level and its not intermittent otherwise the problem will likely be a bad sending unit.

Thanks Dave! Yes, it happens at the same point. Now, how do I replace the sending unit? Thanks in advance!

I haven't done this repair but the JTIS indicates:
The sender unit for the fuel gauge is fitted into the back of the fuel tank and can be serviced without removing the tank. The fuel tank must be drained before removing the fuel gauge sender unit.
You disconnect battery! Drain Tank, pull wires, then they show a keyed tool (see Pic) to remove. Remember new seal with new sender.
Someone who's done it will be along I'll bet and fill in any blanks and perhaps explain how to remove it without the 'tool'

Hello, yes sender is in gas tank.

I would also suggest checking both fuel pumps to make sure they are both working, if not replace at same time.
Many times only one fuel pump working.

Much better power with 2 fuel pumps working when flooring throttle (passing) and at highway or high speeds.

Check by removing relays in trunk by spare tire (box with fuses and relays in front to the right). Sorry do not know exactly which relays, suggest googling fuel pump and fuel pump relays. it's a pretty easy check.

Good Luck and
Remember Happy Motoring...

I think the design changed roughly around 2000 and the sender is not accessible without fuel tank removal on a 2002. That tool is only for the early models.

Actually, I just noticed you had a coupe not a convertible. You should be able to access the pump/sender assembly from the subwoofer opening behind the rear seats without removing the tank.

I see you have a Volvo PV444... I had one as a daily driver back in the '80's when I lived in AZ...

This is a procedure for my 99 look at the photos and see if your float is in the same area if not it is inside the tank.
