Check the filler overflow pipe is not blocked or leaking, blow it through with some compressed air. Check the rubber skirt that seals the filler pipe to the body inside the flap is not leaking or perished. Check the rubber pipe between the filler metal part and the actual tank is not leaking or loose. This is a pain to do, I warn you!

Feel under the carpet and see if it is fuel moist. Under the car is a heat shield for the exhaust and the fasteners can come thru the floor and rub on bottom of tank and cause a leak. I smelled fuel for a while and it took me to tear out everything to find a pinhole in the tank.

I went searching, I am like that.

Apparently his car is a 1995 XJ-S Conv???.

I am NOT familiar with teh fuel cap arrangement on them, but teh earlier Conv had teh Sedan "flip uyp" caps.

Very different to the Coupes whichever way it falls.

Sooo, King19, it might be sweet if you add the car details to your "Sig", that way those that can help will.

My 1985, when I first got it, I overfilled it and it reeked/stunk.

Did you over fill her? The Wizard of Oz (Grant ) taught me to only fill her up to the first click at the petrol bowser.

Before this I filled her right up to the neck and the bloody car reeked until the fuel level went down.

Oh and Grant, I remember you mentioned to use talcum powder to try sprinkle around in the boot near fuel lines to detect where there is a possible fuel seepage was a good hint also
