Gear knob replacement.
I am considering ordering one of these gear knobs, does anyone have experience removing the old one and installing a new one? What is involved?
Thanks.

I recently updated the one on my '94 from the plain wood that I had, to the one that adds that awesome growler at the top. The quality finish and rich wood pattern really give a shot in the arm to the overall looks of the interior. Tip: NOT from Myrtle.
Cheers
OK, I know what the deal is: Yours is an early '94 which came with that black "T" handle. Of the VIN numbers that I have record of, this is the closest I can get to pinpoint the shifter change over:
The "T" shifter will have to do for your car, unless there is an available mod to change the shaft to the round rod, which I haven't heard of, myself. Maybe Myrtle, or Saul down in Altamonte Springs know something about this. The latter is where my knob came from.
Cheers,
- Highest VIN with the "T" handle: VIN 190282 (last six numbers)
- Lowest VIN with Ball type: VIN 190972

The other day I had a guy here installing a new garage door opener, for which I had to pull my baby kitty out to the driveway. Of all the things that make my interior different, he only noticed one..."Nice Jag... love that shifter knob"...
Cheers,
BTW, I have the wood knob that I replaced and I won't be using it. It is in very close to perfect condition, only that it doesn't have the growler at the top.
I need to know what's allowed and what's not here in this thread in regards to "something that I won't be using anymore"...

Cheers,
What do you mean by "no longer required"?
All I can say is that the "T" handle applies to your car and to cars according to my previous post, from which point, and up, they'd require the ball tipe, as explained.

[QUOTE=Forcedair1;907279]The one that I see in your link is a "T" type from older, pre-facelift XJS or older XJ's. If it is for your '94, then you want the "ball" type, which is the one that Calvin was refering to and that just screws to the top of the shifter shaft.
I had always thought the original T-shifter handle on my '89 XJS looked a bit "spindley", and I liked the round wood ball knob too. I bit the bullet, bought it, then clenched my teeth, hacksawed the Tee off, filed down the front/back of the cut off shifter approx. 3/4" down until it was a tad bigger than the 5/16" thread inside the ball, took a hand tap and threaded the filed-down/now round shifter top, screwed ir on until the logo was oriented correctly, DONE. -And yes, I do get many nice comments on the shifter now.

I have an Elm T shifter that I don't need anymore. After an update to all of my walnut, I needed a darker shifter. Would love it to go to a good home here... make an offer to my PM.

That'll do it every time... Good for you, and in your case the compliments have been well earned, thus, well deserved.
Cheers,

I am fairly sure that all 94 v12s came with the threaded ball shift lever.
On the 94 six cylinder cars, 'T' handles were standard.
I think the shift levers can be swapped out by accessing under the console.
I might have a 'T' handled shift lever left over from my donor car.
