having finally got my engine running something like and with the car off the floor on axle stands (safely) I thought I would try putting it into gear. nothing. the wheels lock up in "p" and can be turned by hand when in "n " but nothing in any of the gears including reverse. any suggestions as what to try first or does it seem like the box is knackered? please don't rule out the obvious as I am not very knowledgeable with these cars. many thanks in advance for your time and effort.

 

Put it on the ground, it'll probably work fine. My son panicked when he had his Firebird up on stands and the same thing happened, worked fine on the ground.

It would help if you listed the year of your car and if is it a manual or automatic.
I agree that putting it on the ground might make the difference.
Also, if it is an automatic it could easily just be low on fluid.
