Default Have a 2006 S-Type 19K miles. Buy 1999 XJS Convert 34K Miles?

Hi all;

I have a new wrinkle with my newly gifted 2006 S-Type 4.2. It's mint with 19K miles. I don't need it as a daily driver, but I really love the looks, the ride and the power. Single guy in New York City.

It's a strange coincidence but today a family acquaintance has offered to sell me a 1989 Jaguar XJS V12 convertible with 34K miles., always garaged. The body is mint, convertable top intact but the headliner needs replacing. Fuel injection, electronic ignition. Engine just had some minor work(throttle position sensor) and she's in running condition after sitting 2 years in the garage. Front seat has a big split in the side bolster seatback seam, the walnut ramp by the shifter is cracked, there's a small fuel leak that needs to be fixed on top of manifold, the AC blows hot. Needs a correct sized battery. Suspension checks out fine, no rust, compression is good. The owner is looking for 13K-15K USD for this ride. I was thinking of possible selling the S-Type and maybe picking up this XJS as a "future collectible" as I don't need a daily driver. I was wondering if anyone could chime in on a recommendation of value, collectibility, etc. Thank you!

I'm not sure if it's a wise idea to buy a car as an investment hoping it will appreciate over time.

By all means buy the car because you love the looks and the ride.

If you have your heart set as an XJS as a collector's car, my only advice would be look for a '94-'96 6 Liter 4 speed. Those (IMHO) will be worth something someday.

Bill

P.S. There is a whole world of opinions on this forum, all valid. Mine is just one.

Thanks Bill. This offer fell into my lap. I figure the cost of repairs/ownership over time will turn any appreciation of value into a "wash". It a gorgeous car, but high maintenance as I have no mechanical skills.

IMHO if you do not have any mechanical skills the XJS V12 is probably not the car to have. The thing on this car is they are already asking a high amount for the car and by your description it has a few issues ( nothing too serious ) but some of the things you listed could cost a $1000.00 or more to get taken care of.

Others will chime in but I have heard that the AC issue could become expensive on the V12 rather quickly. If the car was in the $6-7 K range to purchase then it might be worth your time to tackle but at what they are asking I would go a different route-just my 2 cents.

Default XJS Negotiations concluded. Buying her for 12K.

The owner has agreed to sell me the car for $12,000. Since its a garaged car with 34K miles I am taking the plunge. Will need to replace the headliner and driver's side seat leather. Any advice for a reasonable upholstery shop on Long Island would be appreciated.

Hi all;

I got the XJS--but now it seems as if the current battery is not correct for this engine. Can anyone please tell me what specific battery that has the correct size/amperage for this engine?

Thank you!

Gary

welcome to the xjs club I too agree the price was high but it is what you value something as to what you will pay.
