Default heat from vents when climate system is off

Hi all,

I noticed on my 92 coupe the heat vent next to the driver door (maybe others) produces heat when the climate system is turned off. I'm guessing there may be a vacuum controlled flapper that may not be moving? When the AC is on the air is quite cold. Maybe not as cold from the side vent as the center. Not sure about that yet.

What do you think?

I'm curious about this also. The a/c on my car isn't currently working. It sure gets warm in there even without the heater being on.

With the "Select" switch in the OFF position, the vac supply that controls the heater tap is lost, and that tap operates very simply:

Vac supplied, tap is OFF
Vac not supplied, tap is 100% ON.

In that position, the HOT coolant is flowing freely through the heater core, and the "ram air" of the car moving in a forward direction does the rest.

That's why many of us have a compressor by-pass switch, so the system can be used as standard heater/fresh air unit, without the compressor running, simple.

How difficult is it to install this compressor by-pass switch?

Simple enough.

I will sort it in my head tomorrow, 1am here now, and beauty sleep beckons.

Probably more than one way to skin this cat but FYI what l did was cut the green/ brown wire running from a/c control module (pin 20) to compressor relay and accessible by removing R/H console forward extension. Connect the two ends of this green/brown to small toggle switch in ashtray. You will need a couple of short wires for this. I made the connections using alternate male/ female spades so if needed in the future that green/ brown can simply be joined up again as original.
This is assuming your '92 is same as my '89.
Edit. Had a look and your is different but basic method will still work. Compressor feed wire on your system is green/white wire from pin 5 of centre plug on module.

Thanks. I was just in there today to clean our the ac drain. Easy enough to go back and look for this wire. You need the switch in case you want to turn the heat on???

I will leave it to Baxtor to guide you expertly, as mine have ALL been the earlier Del2 units.

With the new switch in the OFF position for the compressor, the rest of the system still operates as normal, just NO compressor running. You want COLD, flick the switch, and it is back to as built by Jaguar.
