Default Hose to No Where?

My 89 XJS has a hose with no obvious connection point. The hose is located on the left side just under the coolant recovery tank (see pictures).

The hose looks like it was cut so I have no idea how long it was originally.

Does anyone know where this hose should connect?

Thanks!
Mark

Looks like part of the HOT START vacuum / electrical system. When the temp sensor under the front of the RH fuel rail sees 70C it will help apply full fuel pressure (3 Bar) to the injectors during start.

The hose is joined with a thinner plastic hose coming from the vac solenoid triggered by the tem sender mentioned above.

That hose goes to your charcoal canister. The valve it is attached to is the canister purge valve.

Yes, you are correct. I followed the hose today and found it went to the charcoal canister. But where does the loose end go? Should'nt it connect the the airbox or some other place to draw the fumes into the engine? How else in the canister evacuated?

I find it hard to believe that was designed to lay in the engine compartment without a connection point or some kind of termination.

It connects to the right of the air box. There is T piece one side goes to the LH airbox and the other side goes to the small pipe between L & R manifolds.

Interesting. Checked my Eurospec car yesterday and mine went to the Hot Start as stated. Do you have both then, using similar valve and hose setup for both?

Ahhhh...thank you for the info.

I'm sure my engine has been modified at some point so the T-fitting on my car is different than yours. The T is there but it is occupied with other hoses. (see photo)

Looks like I will have to add a new T in someplace so I can connect the charcoal canister.

Thanks!

If I am correct, when the car is not running, the Charcoal Canister traps fumes from the gas tank. When the engine is started the vacuum switch is opened and the fumes absorbed by the charcoal are drawn into the engine to be burned.

So purely vac driven then and not electrically as on later models? when did the change happen, the WSM is less than accurate regarding which market got which change when. (I haven't got my parts catalogue here which would probably be more accurate in this context.)

Default Fuel Temperature switch

You wouldn't happen to know where I could get one? Maybe there is a replacement part that is not so fragile?

Google part # EAC5086 and see what comes up.

I suspect any of the usual Jag vendors can get one for you. Not sure if they're still available brand new but, if not, a good used one.

If used is the only choice then it'll be brittle. That's just what happens to plastic parts after years of engine baking :-)

Cheers
