How do I find out car options?
So I noticed before that I have a bracket and plugs for front fog lights and a switch too. How can I find out if it would have actually had them added when bought? Also curious about a couple of other things that a build sheet might help with. Is there a database by Vin somewhere?
I'm not aware of build sheets for Jags, at least not older models, nor a data base for same.
JDHT might be helpful in accessing build records and specs.
What year is your car?

these will have some more info. also check the vin decorder links in the sticky above.

Timeisrelative,
Your VIN, on its own, can not be decoded to give precise build spec. It can only detail the model designation, basic configuration and, by reference, your build date.
A Jaguar Heritage Certificate may identify specific additional components but only if specified for factory build rather than added by the despatching Dealer.
Most of the detailed build specs for models were well-defined through the model brochure available for your year of car. You haven't detailed the year or engine of your XJS but, in the UK at least, front foglights were an option rather than standard for most years, even though the switches and basic wiring looms were often built-in.
Cheers

From Brian Sherwood: “I recently sent for a certificate for my ’84 XJ-S from JCNA, trying to confirm that several
pieces of optional equipment were factory or TWR options.
1. You have to send them all the eng/trans/body/VIN numbers- they will “verify” them (?).
2. Took six weeks to receive reply.
3. Certificate does not say anything about optional equipment. Doesn’t even say what dealer initially
sold the car.
“Unless you have a collector’s class early car (XK, etc.), save your money for parts.”
from the xjs help doc

In many cases the JDHT doesn't know the selling dealer. Jaguar Canada would bulk order the cars and then locally allocate them to dealers within Canada, so the selling dealer was unknown to the JDHT. I was talking to one dealer and he said "we didn't know what we were getting until the truck showed up"
The JDHT will only confirm details like engine and body numbers to prevent fraud of people making "numbers matching" cars of the desirable models when they don't have all the original components. You can ask for the build sheet to show what options were built with the car. That was important for my Daimler DS420 where every car in built to order and unique, but not as much for cars like the XJS that were much more standardized. In the brochures of the time they said "Options: none" the cars were built fully equipped and the only real choice was colour. That will be detailed on the Heritage certificate anyway.

If the button on your dash looks like this, your car did not come with fog lamps. That button is for the rear fog lamps::::
however, if that very same button looks like this:
AND the buttons all the way on the left of the steering wheel have both the defrost and the hazards like this:
then you should have front fog lamps.
if you have a 94-95-96 car and you want to install OEM fog lamps you need
1- The actual fog lights and brackets
2- Fog lamp switch and the hazard/defrost switch as the one on the 2nd And 3rd photos
3-may or may not need a shortening plug. My car did not require one.
but it’s all pre-wired. You just install the brackets, screw on the lamps, connect them to the existing connectors, pop out the old switches and install the new ones.
EDIT- apologies, your car is a 93 I think from your past posts. I was thinking this was for a 95 vehicle

Ok thanks everyone! Yes mines a 93, and yes it looks like I have the proper buttons to have had them installed as an option. Ill have to check my fuse, and then see if I get power to the connectors when I hit the button. Downfall is how expensive they are! Holy cow some of the prices are up there!

now, obviously the lamps are unavailable from JCP , but if you wait a little bit on eBay, someone will list them for a normal price and not 700 dollars.
Timeisrelative,
If you're looking for used lights and brackets, then do your research and be very careful. Not only are the lights extremely expensive but, more importantly, there are fundamental differences between the lights fitted to the late big-bumper cars from VIN 188105 and the ones before that date. The brackets are unique, the wiring plug is different and the light casing is very different because the mounting plate on the back of the case is riveted 180 degrees differently from the early lights. I'm assuming your 1993 is a big-bumper car?
Most sellers really don't know of the differences or choose to ignore them and claim that all lights will fit all XJS. They don't. If you want the lights to be fitted correctly, you have to get the right late lights and their brackets. Or if you've got a pre big-bumper car then you need the early setup.
And sorry, just to upset you a bit more, even the black plastic light lens covers go for silly prices. I've seen them advertised for £220!
Good luck in your search

My vins 188097 so I have the older bumper setup, also as a point of interest, inboard rear brakes. Missed outboard brakes by 8 cars lol 😁. Oh well, at least one of the previous owners had just had the rear redone including all new brakes. If I could get the brackets I might be tempted to just buy some cheaper rectangular fog lights and slap them on, as long as I'm actually getting power to the connectors
Ok so I did some looking today. The connectors that I had seen up front are purple, and the mounting holes definitely had something in them at some point. I tried my buttons and didn’t get anything. Then I turned on my lights and tried my rear fog. Yes it definitely turned on. Then I pushed the front button and the button lit up. I checked with my multimeter and no power at the left purple connector. Then I looked at the right side and didn’t see the connector. I fished around and found the other purple, but also a yellow connector! I tried my multimeter on the purple, nothing. Then I thought what the heck and tried the yellow one, still nothing! I thought well let me check the fuses. They had some corrosion so I cleaned the fuse. I tried the button again, still with the lights on and still no power on the purple ones, but hey! The yellow one has power! I pushed the button off and the power died! On again and yes power! So I started looking around for a yellow connector on the left side and can’t find one! So my questions are, what are the purple connectors for, and should I have a left yellow connector somewhere?
Yellow is for the lights, should be on both sides. Purple goes to the headlight washer, also both sides.
For your vin looks like dac 7320. https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_fro...+7320&_sacat=0
