Default how much transmission mount play?

I've got a 1974 XJ12, but thought this forum had more traction for an answer (sharing that in case there is a difference in mounts--which i don't think there is).

But how much should the tranny move if I push on it? I.e. how much play is normal?

thanks!

Andy,

a 74 should have the BW12 trans??

This PDF will help, go down to the bottom for pictures, as the BW12 is teh same layout as the BW65/66 in the 6cyl cars.

Up and down movement should have "some" resistance, as the :special washer: mentioned slides along the inner bore of the cotton reel bushing. It the trans is loose and sloppy, that washer is either missing (common), or the cotton reel has died, also common.

Come back if you are still unsure.

Thank you sir!!

It feels like the bushing is shot because I can move the rear of the tranny easily with my hand. It looks and feels like a car with a blown shock, just bounces and bounces. Time to replace!

Andy,

A critical criteria is whether the engine fan can touch the top of its shroud because of the deflection of the rear gearbox mount. If there are any scrape marks on the top of the shroud or on the edges of the fan blades, you absolutely have to replace the mount. If a fan blade lets go, it can do huge damage and punch through the bonnet.

Cheers

Paul
