Default Transmission Mount

I have a 1995 XJS 4.0 Automatic Convertible..

How do I tell if the transmission mount is bad? I have a drive line vibe at 60-70+ that is worse while coasting than under load. When under the car the transmission moves up and down rather freely with very little effort.. I have looked and noticed that there are multiple parts/pieces to the transmission mount, how stiff is it supposed to be?

What is the mileage on the car? I would check the universal joints in the rear axle half shafts. One may be wearing out.

I'm not familiar with the specific arrnagment on your car but experience with trans mounts on other Jags is:

- they are all needlessly complex :-)
- they all have more movement than an typical rubber block type of mount
- they are made from soft materials for noise/vibration insulation
- they are sometimes weak/too soft even if they don't appear broken
- when in doubt, replace!

I'd say about 1" of easy movment is typical.

Besides the u-joints already mentioned also check the driveshaft bearing....if your model has one. I'm not sure if it does. It's what secures and isolates the driveshaft from the body of the car. If you have one it'll probably be more towards the rear of the driveshaft.

Cheers

There is a UTube vid showing a change out / repair on a 4L 6Cyl trans mount. They did it by raising the car, supporting the trans, lifting the trans, removed the cross member&trans mount, cleaned-replaced all parts and then replaced everything.

Now for the correct You Tube Segments

YouTube - Wheeler Dealers - Jaguar XJS - 1/4

4 segments, one covers the trans mount change out.
