Default how to override or bypass the neutral safety switch

How can I override or bypass the neutral safety switch? The car started to refuse to crank lately, I moved the shifter up and down and eventually it would start but now no more. Won't start in P or N. Electricity is there.

Any ideas on how to bypass or disable this switch? Any connector I can pull? I know that the XK8 has a special access screw just to override this switch but could not find any info on the XJS.

The car is a 92 XJS

Thanks, Mark

figured it out, it was one of the three starter relays, just took them out and switched them around, car started!

My '88 XJ-S periodically won't start unless I jiggle the shifter back and forth and I feel certain this work-around will stop working right when I'm where a tow truck can't get to me.

I don't need this switch to be functional and I'd be just as happy to disable it entirely.

Any insights on how to disable this feature on an '88? It's an intermittent problem at this point and while it's working properly, I can't test by trial and error.

Thanks in advance,
Rhett

I opened my console and connected the wires. No longer needed and won't keep me from starting my car.

Could you be more specific? Which console? Which wires?

Thanks.

Take the 'ski slope' off. This is the wood panel around the shift lever. Wires coming to the micro switch below the lever that opens and closes when you move the lever.

RagJag,
Can you be a bit more specific? BTW I'm right up here near Charlottesville.

The switch in the centre console provides ground to the starter relay placed on RH inner wing. I just gave the relay an alternative ground and does now have starter active in all gear selections

Just remember to put it in neutral when you want to start it otherwise it will take off down the road.
You may be leaning in with your head in the footwell trying to find another fault, start it in drive and end up being dragged into the scenery.
Look what happened to Ensign Chekov.

As Steve said above, this mod is fantastically dangerous, both to you and others. All the cutout consits of is a microswitch on the front of the gear lever quadrant that is easy to adjust or replace.
