Assuming 1996 XJS?
Clearance is determined by various thickness spacers, item #5 in this picture

The nut simply prevents the works from falling off the car !
Often replacement bearings are so close to original in size that changing spacer thickness isn't needed...but variances do occur. Plus, how far onto the shaft you've pressed the bearing enters into the mix as well.
Do you have the shop manual? There should be a section described the measurement procedure to get the right clearance. It's a bit of a PITA.
