Leaking Power Steering Pump Housing
I purchased a rebuilt power steering pump. When I received the pump, the end of the metal tube on the back of the pump was bent down close to the back of the pump housing. I did not know what the tube was to look like. It looked like there was enough space between the pump housing and the tube to install the hose that needs to be installed. I went to install the pump and found that the tube was supposed to be bent much further away from the back of the pump. I gently pulled the tube up just far enough to install the mounting bracket. Where the tube enters the back of the pump, it was leaking a little oil. When I bent the tube up, it seemed to be leaking more. How is the tube attached and sealed inside the pump? Is there an o-ring and a nut tightened to the back tin plate? Will I have to disassemble the entire pump to fix the leak, or has anyone had luck with brazing the tube to the tin backplate?
The tubes are silver soldered into the cover at the factory. I wouldn't try re soldering or brazing it without removing the cover. I believe it is a GM (Saginaw) pump, might find a good back cover at the local wrecking yard.
Thats the low pressure return, you can probably take it off, degrease it very well, including removing the paint, and use some JB weld to stop a seep leak.
or, take it off.
There is large o-ring at the front of the pump that seals to the reservoir. Once disassembled you can have it brazed or soldered.
