Hello to all Jaguar fans. I've posted several times on this forum looking for help so I can enjoy my 1988 Jaguar XJS V12, and it's been parked for seven months and I can't turn it on. I checked that the injectors were working properly, and during the installation process, these cables were disconnected. Could that be the reason it won't turn on? If anyone could help me connect them, I'd appreciate it.
Definitely a possibility on the not starting is the top photo, as only one side of the Ducillier coil primary is connected. All the white wires go on one tower, and the white with black tracer go on the other. The original dual coil system had male spade terminals for one side, and female spades on the other ( to avoid incorrect connection). When the single Ducillier coil is installed, you have to install female spade terminals on the harness. Be sure to disconnect the coil mounted in front of the radiator and insulate any bare terminals; best just to remove the coil in front of the radiator along with the 2 wire harness that connects it the the coil by the throttle capstan.
The red sensor is the oil pressure warning light switch, won’t prevent the engine from starting ( but should be connected so you know if you have oil pressure).
Thanks for responding. This community is very helpful to me because here in my country, the Dominican Republic, there isn't a single mechanic who dares to fix those cars. If you could tell me where each wire goes, I'd appreciate it. I read your message, but I don't understand where each wire is located.
Luis
You do not say the year of your car. Earlier XJSs had TWO coils, and the two large wires with the black outer cover were the wires that came from the second coil (located in front of the radiator) to the one on the capstan. These two can be removed.
As it looks like your car has been fitted with the later single coil, these two wires can be removed.
The single white wire with no connector on it, the one just above the right hand coil terminal in the photo, MIGHT have 12v on it when the ignition is turned on. Test it, if it does, then check if the UNUSED coil terminal has a tiny + cast into the plastic round it somewhere. If the unused coil terminal is marked + put a connector on the white wire and plug it onto the coil terminal. Then try to start the car.
The blue striped white wire is the tacho signal, by the way.
If you view the first photo, one tower of the coil has wires attached and the other has none. All of the white wires (without stripes/tracers) should connect to ONE of the towers, and the white with black stripe/tracer connect to the other tower.
Look at the panel in front of the radiator ( behind the grille) and see if there is a silver ignition coil with a black boot covering the terminal end- if there, the two wires that are enclosed in the black sheath can be removed from the car, along with the silver coil.
At this point you should have two white wires on one tower of the coil (marked with “+”) and one white with black stripe/tracer on the other (marked “-“). They should have female 1/4” spade terminals installed, which should be available at any auto parts or service facility.
Also appears that the coil high tension cable that goes from the coil to the distributor center tower has a burned spot in the insulation, you may need to replace that also.
The “+” and “-“ are very small, between the terminals on each coil tower.
