Default Magnetic plug removal

I guess I'm one of the lucky ones that has a magnetic drain plug in the rear diff. What size is it and what do I use to remove it? I tried one of those Gator Grip universal sockets on the end of a 1/2" breaker bar, but all I got was some small pieces from the corners that fell to the floor. Is all hope lost, or can it still be taken out?

Assuming you have the Salisbury diff, I believe it is a 3/4" BSP plug. Don't know what a Gator Grip is but the right tool is a pipe plug socket.

Cheers,

You have a square-head drain plug, right? I use the female end of a short 1/2" drive extension to engage the square-head and then and open-end or adjustable/crescent wrench on the other end. If the corners of the plug are not too badly rounded you could probably do the same.

Cheers

This is probably a good time for a reminder to always make sure you can get the fill plug out of differentials, transfer cases, transmissions etc. BEFORE you remove the drain plug.

I know its not quite the case here, but, it doesn't hurt to keep in mind for other situations. You're kind of up the proverbial creek if you've already drained your fluid and can't get the fill plug out.

I've never heard of a Gator Grip either; is it related to the Croco Clamp?

A "Gator Grip" is right up there with "Vice Grips" in my book....good for rounding stuff off!

Most are typically a half inch drive female. If not, pb blast the hell out of it and use an adjustable wrench.
