Default Maintance code FF44 for 1993 XJS

Received a warning light for check engine. The code brought up was FF 44. Believe that it involves O2 sensor on right bank of a 6 cyl engine. Not sure if that's the fault and if it is should I pull sensor and clean or replace it? I'm not even sure it is the o2 sensor fault
Engine appears to run fine. Would appreciate any input you can provide

There are a whole number of reasons why an FF44 might throw. A faulty lambda sensor is just one of them. Faulty earth points are another, exhaust leak another, faulty feed to the heater element is another etc etc. Many owners have just changed sensor and not resolved the issue.

I'd suggest clearing the code and see if it returns. If it does start by measuring the voltage on the sensor whilst the engine is running. You can do that from the wiring connections in the engine bay. Or else just use a cheap phone app with your OBDII dongle and monitor it. Then report back.

Good luck

Paul

I take it,paul you agree that ff44 is the O2 sensor. Do you know what the voltage should be on the Sensor? OBD!! not applicable for 1993 model (no plug)
Dont believe there is a Lambda sensor on the 1993 The 1993 service manual speaks to it but the supplement 1993 maintenance supplement (owners manual) does not'
What is a lambda sensor?????

Jaguar issued a TSB for the later car. Info for you about FF44 or FF45.

A lambda sensor is sometimes referred to as an oxygen sensor.

Sorry! Forgot you had a pre-OBDII car!

Take the voltage reading at the wiring connection point in the engine bay by backprobing the wires.

When you first start the car it'll probably be between .4 v to .6v Once warm it will vary between .1v and 1.2v

Cheers

Paul

Replacement O2 sensor cured the FF44 code on my car. The AJ6/V12 engines use common sensors, the later AJ16 engines use special sensors. I like the NTK brand, then have worked well for me, plus have a slimmer profile that makes them easier to install. I get them at Rock Auto usually.

Maybe a fluke, but when I repaired the exhaust leak between the manifold and the down pipe, the code went away.
