micro switches and trunk
All,
I continue to run down the final details on the '86.
Quick background:
I bought this car two years and last summer/fall I refurbished the engine bay and suspension. New hoses, belts, plugs, wires, water pump, fan, battery, filters, fluids. brakes.
Drove it sparingly around the neighborhood to test systems and worked up to short drives (under 3 miles) on a local highway. Car ran very well but noticed it wasn't shifting into 3rd reliably. Bit the bullet and took it to a very reputable local transmission shop. Got the car back last Friday. Runs and shifts great. NO kickdown right now because we disconnected the wires from the micro switches.
Issue: Shop foreman told me that 3rd gear was burnt out. Suspected the micro switches on the throttle cable and/or the one on the tower had been misadjusted or were not working.
Both micro switches can be adjusted slightly - maybe a few mm's.
Q. Where should those micro switches be set? How do you know if you have it right?
Second but unrelated issue. Can the trunk be adjusted. When closed you can still press down on it a few mm's where the trunk id lines up with the outside seams. I am certain the car was repainted at some point and maybe they didn't get it back together to factory spec's.
Two or three other issues to address that should be pretty easy: wiper motor (I have a new motor); fan - Hi speed; and oil pressure gauge and this car will be done. It is very nice but I won't be keeping it.
Thx in advance

The switch on the throttle cable is the kickdown switch.
The lever arm of the switch fits into a little slot or window in the throttle cable housing. Have a helper push the throttle right down to the floor while you observe what happens in the little slot. With the pedal hard on the floor you should see a little nub on the throttle cable in the slot. This little nub is what pushes the lever arm of the switch, activating the kickdown circuit. Loosen the switch and pivot it so that it closes (you'll hear a little click) when the lever arm is pushed by the nub. With the throttle released slightly the nub will go away and the switch should open (another little click)
Listening for clicks can be replaced with a test light or meter that will show open/closed circuit
Sometime a switch will break inside which prevents it from opening....or closing.
As I recall the trunk adjustment is taken at the striker....the part that's on the body of the car (as opposed to the latch mechanism on the trunk lid itself). Loosen the striker bolts just enough to wriggle the striker down a bit...like an 1/8' of an inch. Sometimes it takes a bit of trial and error
Cheers

Further to Doug's point, the microswitch on the capstan (this was only fitted on USA or N.A. cars) is a full throttle enrichment switch, which is a duplicate circuit to the FTE vacuum switch which is that thingy on the top cabin end of the A bank manifold with a vac tube going to it and two wires emerging from it.
Neither have anythign to do with the gearbox.

All,
Micro switch tested out as 'good.' Now set correctly on the throttle cable. (had to unstick the cable housing from the bracket). Now just have to reset the throttle butterfly valves.
Adjusted the trunk striker downward about 1/8". Tightened it up with better alignment.
