I'm looking for a mint XJS 6 Cyl. with miles under 65,000. Specifically a 1996 convertible. The colors I want are Sea Mist Green, Dark Blue and possibly a dark BRG. I've
been looking for a few months and the only one I found was gone before I could reply to the owner. There are lots of cars that are in not to good shape and quite a few that have 12 cyl engines. It would be nice to find one that is not to far from home but that is asking a lot. I guess I'll just have to wait and keep looking.

Sea Mist Green isn't a colour used on XJSs. For a 96 car, the colours you might want are Westminster Blue (a dark solid colour), Sapphire Blue (dark metallic) and a very rare Mica Jade Green, which is the closest available colour to Sea Mist.

Of those 3 colours, Sapphire Blue will be the most populous.

Your order is a little 'tall' - the last 6 cyl was produced April 96 so there aren't many of them the production numbers for 1996 are 5490 cars globally, being specific on colour etc won't make the search easier. I think Greg who frequents here may have some production numbers in more detail - can't be sure though

 

Also, what is your definition of "mint"?

 

I stand corrected on the Sea Mist Green. The colour is Mica Jade Green. I know it will be difficult to find the right car but that is what I want. My definition of "mint" is as close to new condition and maintained properly as possible. Mint may be a loose interpretation but it is important that the car is in REAL NICE condition. I might be persuaded to purchase a 1995 if it is exceptional.

 

Im looking for natural blonde or redhead with curls, a pretty face, 30-35yrs old. Slim and stacked. Eager to please, with great cooking skills. Non complaining, cleaning and laundry is a must! Looked at that process, NAH, trade in values are crap, and that forced me to keep the one I have. After 37 years together, probably the best decision.

That search is yours to make, no argument there.

The mileage is a tad low for a GOOD 25+ year old car. We all want that, well down here we dont, but service history is important.

ALL, and I mean ALL, the rubber type components will be PAST their use by date, no matter the mileage. Rubber stuff deteriorates with age as well as use. Bear that in mind, as the XJS has a HEAP of rubber suspension bits, just for starters.

The 2000+ miles per year, should have a HUGE folder of repairs/service papers.

Jaguars that sit, are generally worse overall than prperly used examples.

OF COURSE our market is opposite to yours in many ways.

Most of my fleet are well over 500K kms, and still thundering down the highway. Engines/trans/diffs, as made in teh UK. Other things replaced as needed of course, some twice, they wear out.

FYI, total worldwide production of 1996 4.0L two-plus-two's was only 1485. A '96 4.0L coupe is even rarer at 120, a '96 6.0L two-plus-two at 2, a '96 6.0L coupe at 1!

I would think I'd have to pay between $20,000 and $28,000 depending on miles and condition.

 

Well it's your search as has been said - but 'mint' for that money - not happening.

It's not technically a Celebration, but it is a nice spec and that rare preferred colour. It has the pre-Celebration spec that existed for a short period of time after the intro of the AJ16 engine. I have one from that period myself. Key differences are: Teves AVS brakes rather than the separate master cylinder on later cars, Non-piped seats although they do have the integral headrests, standard leather airbag steering wheel rather than the later wood and leather wheel. And it does have the chromed 5-spoke wheels.

This car looks to be in good shape, and from what I can see, can be made perfect with what I think is minimal work. But as-is, it is not in “mint” or “exceptional” condition as the OP indicated, which I imagine means concours or perfect.

Just from a cursory inspection of the photos of the Oak Park car, it needs:



-Lighter.

-New or refurbished ski Slope (wood console), it’s starting to crack.

-Entry remote (I don’t see one attached to keys) .

-Front bumper is cracked, will need a touch up.

-Front bumper is missing under-tray, will need one.

-Drivers seat leather will need a bit of pigmentation, it looks fine but may be starting to show signs of slight color cracking.

-Brake boot/gaiter may be missing. Some 95 models did not come with it, mine did.

-Temperature gauge is passing N. While that can be perfectly normal in facelift cars, I would prefer for it not to happen from idling in the show room. She may need a proper radiator service, radiator foam, perhaps a new aux fan, lower fan temperature switch etc.

I have seen XJS’s out there that require zero work, at least zero cosmetic work, but you will have to pay accordingly. None of the things I listed would be a deterrent for me, and would require relatively minimal expense and work to resolve.

While the OP has indicated that 65k miles is the maximum mileage he is willing to accept, I would point out that many XJS’s , such as mine, with higher mileage, much more closely resemble the 12k example I posted above rather than the 55k mile example in Oak Park (All modesty aside, my car is actually 100 percent superior to the 55k Oak Park car, at least cosmetically)…. My car is not for sale, just a thought. These cars are so durable that people are typically not afraid to invest in new interiors, paint, tops, and the most minimal details at higher mileages. Rather than sticking to a strict mileage number, it may be more important to find a car from an enthusiast that is compulsive about his vehicle. Good luck
