Default Mystery Wiring Harness 96 XJS

HI - I'm trying to rewire my stereo after removing a mishmash installed by the previous owner... in the process I have tripped across this pristine wiring harness - it inside the center console, about even with your right knee (USA Car, left hand drive). I found it when I removed the knee panel. Couple of photos attached. I wonder if it is an unused harness for the trip computer/etc that was an option in the 1996 model. My jag doesn't have it. It's not the diagnostic port - that's clearly visible under the dash to the left side close to the door. Any clues? Part of me is also wondering if I can use this harness to get power and ignition wire that have gone missing in my stereo install. The previous owner had a pro stereo shop install a really complex system and in the process they eviscerated the normal wiring harness for the stereo... Thoughts? Also - while I'm at it, the speaker wires appear to be spliced into the main stereo harness in some mystery spot... anyone had any experience tracking down where that is?

I think it is the trip computer as you state. That would make sense.

Trip computer harness is red, and you do have it. It's behind the clock. If you ever buy a trip computer, it'll plug right in.

its definitely got nothing to do with a trip computer.

I'll check my car next time I have a chance

That connector looks like what connects to the factory radio. In the first picture the thick blue wire with the round connector goes to the back of the factory radio to control a trunk mounted CD changer.

I concur. I was going to say that, but wanted to wait until I had a chance to check my own car.

Was there an aftermarket stereo already in?

ksjaguar,

As mentioned by others, it's the Jaguar-specific plug for the original audio. You can buy an adapter for just a couple of £/$ that will then interface to a standard ISO unit. See my thread here on upgrading the audio in my late XJS:

JEC BB Index

You'll see the pics of the plugs.

Cheers

Default mystery connector redux

Thanks guys - there is/was an aftermarket stereo installed that I have removed and the wiring left behind is a mess and makes no sense - if this is the harness for the factory stereo that would be great. I will start to poke at it accordingly. And to ptjs1 - thanks for your input and will look at your thread.

Hey Paul - you don't happen to still have a link/URL to that adaptor? I can't find it anywhere....

ksjaguar,

I appreciate you're not in the UK, so not sure what words you use over there to describe the audio wiring standards. We call them by the name "ISO" standards. The plug you want is referred to as as a PC2-66-4

So if you just go to ebay and type "Jaguar XJS ISO plug PC2-66-4", I'm pretty sure you'll find a number of cheap options and see what I mean.

If you see my article on updating the audio, you'll see it's easily the best thing to just use one of these adapter plugs so you don't have to butcher the wiring and can go back to original later should you wish.

Cheers

Paul

...unless you add an amp (or one was previously added). In which case the butchering will be necessary.

The OE radio failed on my car, so I put in an Alpne of similar vintage. The reason for that was to have plug and play for the CD changer ( the Jaguar unit is made by Alpine).

I went to the junkyard and found the female plug to match the plug shown in the OP's photos. Then I made a short bridging harness, so the factory harness is untouched and I can plug in the radio. Jag plug on the right, Alpine plug on the left.

Thanks guys - I believe I found the harness - will let you know how it works out. Here's a link to the seller who had it for my 96 New Jaguar XJS 95 96 Radio Harness Adapter for Aftermarket Radio Installation | eBay

ksjaguar,

That seems a lot of money without any standard ISO plugs on the end for your new unit. Wouldn't you be better off just buying one of the standard adapters which seem cheaper and give you the ISO plugs on the end?

Do they use the ISO connectors in the US ? The new pioneer radio l just bought didn't have them. Cables are just loose.

Malc4d,

ISO10487 is / was the International standard for wiring between head units and car systems.

As a result, most audio head manufacturers built their units using this 2 x 8-pin connector as the frame of their unit.

Then from 2000, some car manufacturers started using the Quadlock standard for the wiring in their cars. This then necessitated the use of adapter plugs to interface to ISO10487 head units.

Then some audio manufacturers started developing their own connectors in the audio frame, thus necessitating adapter plugs to interface to cars pre-wired with ISO10487 wiring looms!

Pioneer started building audio headunit frames with a proprietary 16-pin standard in about 2003. The plug in your pic fits into that type of Pioneer headunit. To fit that Pioneer headunit to a late XJS (without splicing wires) you need either a Jaguar to 2003-Pioneer adapter, OR a Jaguar to ISO adapter + an ISO to 2003-Pioneer adapter.

Hope that makes sense

Paul

Thanks Paul.
I did see that there is an pioneer to ISO adaptor available, but......it would then fill the whole space up with adaptor to adaptor to adaptor to..........ROFL

Last couple of units l have fitted to various cars l have not used a plug as such. The radios have been supplied with it's own plug and pigtail wires, l simply strip short length on end of each, tin the wire and then flatten that with pliers to give flat prong and insert into appropriate place in car harness socket. Never had one come adrift yet.
