Default New wheels and tires

I am looking to upgrade the wheels and tires on my 1987 Jag XJ-SC. I am looking at both 16' and 17'. What is the best new size and how big can I go with each tire size without overdoing it?

I decided not to go above 17", but I know some people are doing well with 18.

Might not be the biggest wheels, but most of the 16x7 wheels from the XJ sedans through the 90's should fit without any modifications or spacers. You can get a 225/55 tire without a problem, and could probably fit a 225/60 or 235/60 as well. There are a lot of 16" wheels to choose from and they're pretty inexpensive.

16" wheels were standard on MY95-96 cars and certain 94's like mine pictured below. Shod with 225/55 Z rated tires, I think they look quite well proportioned on the car. They also improve handling significantly although with a slight loss in ride comfort.

I couldn't agree more, Allan .... and your kitty in that picture is breath taking, somehow reminds me of another one that I've seen around....

I would agree with 16", it leaves enough sidewall to keep the ride from being too harsh. The larger the wheel the more the ride deteriorates.

really wanted to get asteroids onto mine. but due to mismatched nuts on the seller's couldn't get it done before i had to take it on a long road trip.

those asteroids only pop up for sale every once in a while, and some want north of 1500 for them. not sure they're worth that, but at least some of the xjr's have a full size spare.

Those are OEM on my 2002 XJR.
About a year ago I replaced two of them at $450.00 a pop, but mine are the chrome version, which increases the price substantially.

wheels are like opinions, everybody thinks there are the best!
fair enough, i think mine make the XJS look like a smaller car, which is fine with me!

Gail Hill's Gulf XJS race cars (UK) have featured both, the Revolver wheels from the XK8 and the Asteroids wheels from the XJR (stock wheels on my own XJR). Here's a couple of pics of her cars for comparisons. Of course, being race cars, no chrome applies.

Cheers,

BTW, when the Revolver wheels were installed on my XJS, it was necessary to add 1/4" spacers on both front wheels, so the center emblem wouldn't pop out. The rear wheels did not need spacers.

The brand new wheels/tires set came out of an XK8 being sold at the local Jag dealer (the owner had different wheels in mind) so the tires were the XK8 stock P zeros.

Cheers,

I found this video on you tube showing off some really great looking XJS's and their cool looking wheels. Some great looking rims. I think you too will enjoy it.

I've oft wondered how a set of Minilites would look on an XJS

Minilite,Minilite wheels, historic and classic car wheel replacement, competition and Classic Car Enthusiast, mini lite wheels

Vintage car, vintage wheels. I dunno. Just a thought

Cheers
