Well, i overtightened the nut when attaching the battery wire to the pump, broke the screw off ........ walked away for a day, now ... getting ready to solder the wire to the pump..... any opinions before i do that , or... how risky is that ?

Yes, but do it as quickly as you can. Do not get it too hot so you fry some component inside. I suggest you solder on a piece of wire and put a connector onto that piece. test it, then coat the soldered part in a support coating of epoxy glue: Araldite, JB weld etc. So it does not vibrate loose at the most inconvenient moment. The tape the piece of wire to the pump body firmly, so the wire is not putting vibrating stress on the soldered part.

Pump in, car started, smelled a burning odor, after a few seconds, shut it down, saw some smoke from the engine compartment. Kinda smelled like wire burning, but not sure, did not see any evidence of that. Then noticed some gas dripping from the pump, did not have time today, but will pull and reattach the pump Saturday, then restart the car, probably keep a fire extinguisher handy , car hadnt been started in at least ten months, maybe more, any ideas on what it could be smoking from the engine dept

Hi Johnde

Gas/Petrol dripping from the Pump could be a loose or distorted Jubilee Hose Clip or maybe some sort of back pressure, in the event of an outside chance that the New Fuel Filter may have been put on the wrong way round, or blocked if you're using the old one.

As for the Smell of Burning Rubber it could be from a belt, if something like the Alternator - Aircon Motor or Water Pump has seized up.

Ok , so reattached the pump, started car, idled for 5 minutes , ran up and down my street, circled a few parking lots, some light gray smoke was coming from the engine along the engine fire wall/ driving compartment. Car stalled once, restarted right away, parked it home hsppy that I was up and running, went to drag wife along for a ride( in the illegally unregisteted car lol ) andcwould not start. Seems like battery drained. So was the smoke the alternator belt ? Kinda had an oil smell, saw some cheap alternators at rockauto.com,any more advise ? I know im in for a nice long term project, the engine roared and felt good accelerating.

Hi Johnde

Before you buy a New Alternator, you really need to find the cause of the problem, as it could have been something else like a seized pulley.

Jumped car, started right up, drove nice, must be the alternator i guess ? No smoje coming from engine today , car ran smooth.

Notice the wiring strewn across the engine, is this safe ? Is this how it was designed to be ? How do i fix that ? Any ideas ?

Need a closer pic to be able to identify individual wires and an idea of the termination points.

Default Xjs alternator

ok , need to replace my alternator in my 1985 xjs, i picked up a 115 amp to replace the 75 amp as ive read that the extra amps will improve the timing of the engine. Is that true ? Also any advice on replacing the alt. ? I have to reuse the pulley, do have a new belt, does not look to be all that hard of a job, anyone here have any much needed advice ? Thanks

It's not too difficult to replace the alternator. It has a separate belt BUT it's at the back so you need to pull the other belts off to replace the belt.

Mine went in from the top so you'll need to

remove the RH air filter assembly.
remove the AC belt tensioner.
disconnect wire's from alternator.
remove bolts for alternator bracket from block most are accessed from underneath I think 1 or 2 I got from the top, but you'll work that out.
remove alternator from top.

A 115 amp alternator will do nothing for the timing of the engine. It will allow you to run more electrical equipment, electric fans etc.
