Hi all,

I have an 84 XJS HE and i'm going to have the oil changed this week. What is the recommended oil to use? Thanks in advance.

Hi Malchick

Lots of different opinions on this but I have been using Magnatec 10/40 Semi Synthetic

Although I am now thinking of changing over to a Good Quality Semi Synthetic 10/40 and Changing the Oil Twice a Year instead of once.

10/40 Semi synthetic sounds good to me. I'll head out and get some prices. Thanks.

Mine has only ever - as far as all the service papers state - had 20W50 mineral oil... Changed every 5000 miles or 12 months, what ever came first... Looking inside the engine, it is all clean...

Yeah, 20/50 is generally more popular with V12 owners but the manuals list 10/40 as an acceptable weight as well. I use 20/50 unless the engine will be exposed to sub-freezing start-ups, then I switch to 10/40

I, too, have used only conventional oil in my V12s.

Cheers
DD

As I live in a moderate clime, my cars have used 20-50 dino oil for decades. No Jaguar V12's albeit. And, I graduated to the 5K or once a year interval. , so far...
I prefer Valvoline or as sold under the CARQUEST label. Why? Because it is often on sale there. Have I used other name brands, because of a sale, definitely.

I use whatever full synthetic is on sale (same oil goes into both cars and motorcycle).

5W/30 fully synthetic say I, any well known make whatever is cheapest! No discernible wear on the cams or followers after 100,000 miles and not even a witness mark. Changed at 7,500 miles or 2 years whichever first.
I have to say, as long as you use decent oil and change it regularly, I do not suppose it matters. But on here, as every other car forum, everyone has their favourite, and "which oil" threads attract loads of comments.

Something like 11.5l or so goes into the V12 but that is full flow oil cooler... Also, you won't get all the oil out.
