Default Power steering pump modifications.

I've read that more than a few people are unhappy with their steering, being over assisted or under assisted.
I stumbled across this page whilst looking for some information on P/S pump outlets and thought it was well worth sharing.
Bear in mind it is written by a four wheel drive enthusiast and obviously they run much more assist due to larger tyres etc, but the principles are the same and it's good information for those who wish to easily play around with pump pressures.
Given how cheap Saginaw pumps are, no big deal if you totally ruin a part either, just go and buy a used pump from a junkyard.

Spent a while last winter rebuilding part of my ps system. Since I was replacing both hoses, to the steering rack, I decided to get a rebuilt pump (ebay). Also redid the radiator overflow as it was easier to remove the pump with it out of the way. Took a while and had to lower the steering rack to get to remove and install the hoses. For less than $200 US, it was well worth it... She drives lovely now. and waiting for the next problem....lol...
good luck

my 78 XJS had an old GM cast iron pump, heavy weight, so i came across a nice light weight alum. pump from a 1995 Dodge Viper(4lbs).

pic of the aluminum front pulley, replace the old cast iron heavy one!

many small weight savings , is why my 1978 XJS V12 roadster weighs 3370lbs.

Great, this mod is works. Steering spins freely. I did everything, drilled, pulled up to the spring 2. 25-inch, washers removed from the valve.
Thank to all.

My wife will be happy

Has anyone modified the power steering pump to take power out. My steering seems overpowered. Not as bad as my old Dodges back in the day. But I'd like more road feel.

Just wondering if you could replace the mechanical power steering pump with an electrically driven pas pump.
Seem to remember a Ford I owned (UK model) had electrohydraulic power steering, had the advantage of variable assistance levels, alternatively would changing the drive pulley to reduce pump speed provide the desired result.

Haven't tried either method, just theorising.

Loads of sensors needed and a new steering rack...
