Default Power Steering Return Line Question

Hi,
I'm looking to find out what the thread size is for the low pressure return line on my 1988 XJS. This is the fitting (male threads) that screws into the rack and pinion unit. I want to build a new hose, so am just looking for the fitting size so I can locate one. Thanks in Advance!

I don't know the thread size, sorry.

If it's any help, though, I recall from my '88 XJS days just cutting off the crimp collar an installing a new hose on the existing fitting with a clamp. Worked fine. Wouldn't want to do this on the pressure hose, of course.

I use Oetiker clamps for this type of repair but a regular hose clamp would work, I reckon

Cheers
DD

Thanks for the response DD. My problem is I don't have the return line. This car was missing a few parts when I picked it up, the return line being one of them. I can get a new one for $99 US, but am thinking I can build one for considerably less. Thanks again

That mighty well turn out to be a long chase.

I would contact David Boger at Everydayxj for either a core or good used or even a NOS unit. he has a passel of cars and parts.

Good guy and lists here.

Do not waste your time, the hose is $9.69 on rock auto for a Genuine AC Delco hose, its a GM Saginaw pump anyhow. I replaced mine a few weeks ago, totally easy. If you're missing the finned cooler on the return line, then get a cheap inline unit.

That $9.69 hose is probably a length of 5/8" (I think that was the size) hose for the non-pressurized return line.

The hoses with the fittings Are quite a bit more. Do a local Google search on shops that will custom fabricate lines for you. If you ring in the needed hose, they can make an exact replica in no time.

Default It's not just a length of hose

Nope, it has the metal tube with flared fitting on it. Look it up and it will answer any doubts you may have. To each his own but I just did mine and it was a perfect fit. fab shop wanted $39 to remake using my metal piece.

Thanks so much for everyone's input on my question. It's 3/8" hose. I just picked up the correct fitting and a length of hose and viola, a new return hose! Kind of a bugger to screw in and cinch down in those confined spaces but I got 'er done, as they say. Thanks again!

My mistake, I was caught up in the hose spec for my 1996 MY, where it is indeed a standard off the shelf hose. I see the older models are different.

THanks.
