Default Pre-facelift : removing instrument pod

Kirby Palm's book mentions removing the heater matrix on the pre-facelift, by removing the instruments and then sliding the matrix to the left (after cutting the pipes).

Question is, how does one remove the instruments?

Has anyone done the heater matrix removal this way?

Depends on the year model. My 1989 has flanges that connect to the matrix so no need to cut any pipes to remove the heater core.

To remove the cluster there are 2 covers on the top far left and right, pop these out and there are 2 phillips head screws. Pull the steering forward and remove the cluster by tilting it forward at the top, this will allow you to reach behind and remove the 2 plugs in the back of the cluster, and lift it out.

More specifically, the Delanair Mk III system has the flanged heater core with the removable pipes. The pipes are disconnected and the core slides out to the right.

The Mk II system has the fixed pipes. Cutting the pipes is a popular shortcut to ease the difficulty of the job

The easiest way to tell if you have the Mk III system is the "pull for manual control" feature on the temp control knob

The Mk III was introduced 1987-ish
