Default Pulling Codes

Hello,

Trying to help a buddy of mine with his '92 XJS convertible...with a vested interest as I am thinking about buying it from him. I have tried to search here but I'm not having any luck.

The Check Engine light is on. Based on my searches, it looks like the codes can be retrieved through the tip computer...correct? What's the procedure for doing that? If that's not right, where's the plug for the code reader?

Thanks

When you first key-up the ignition switch, the trip computer should show the fault code for a couple seconds before the clock comes up. When I first bought mine, a "FF44" would come up. FF44 refers to the right side O2 sensor. Replaced it, disconnect the battery to clear the code and reconnect the battery and it was good to go. Not sure if the trip computer would show multiple codes, or just one at a time (repair that, clear codes and restart and see if it throws another). Also, make sure you have the radio code to unlock the radio when you disconnect the battery.

There is also a secret wire in an unmentioned loom behind the trip computer (I think from memory it's pink) This wire, when grounded cycles through all of the codes captured in the computer, then resets them all. I'm not saying I get a lot of FF codes, but let's just say I don't like having to reset all of the settings on my stereo every time I disconnect the battery, so I have this wire connected through a hidden switch in the right hand ashtray so I can flip the switch, review and reset all of the codes without disconnecting the battery.

If it's FF17, that means TPS (throttle position sensor) resistance is out of range. Below is the diagnostic procedure:

After several years, I finally solved my FF44 problem. Turns out an exhaust leak before the sensor can trigger it. Repaired the leak and the problem disappeared.
