Looks like a 1991-older to my eyes

A 94 would have the colour keyed wrap around bumpers and body colour mirrors. Canadian /USA 6.0 cars also had a trunk mounted spoiler. As Doug says, this is an older car, likely a 5.3.

is it being aged via its import registration ticket, rather than its build date from the VIN ?

built 93, imported during 94 for example, as it takes time to ship em across the pond

The Model Year system can be a bit confusing at first. The vehicle currently on sale on January 1st determines the Model Year, so at some point before that the manufacturer stops production, makes a bunch of changes, and starts production again. Everything made after that point will be the next Model Year, even if its made in the same year. My car, for instance, is a 1987 Model Year. It has an August 1986 build date. They made some changes, probably in July '86, then started churning out '87s through the next summer, when they started making '88s. And so on.

As for the car OP posted, it could be a '94. The sides look right, the wheels look right, the emblem on the fender is right. The headlights and bumper are wrong. Its possible someone changed the headlights and bumper to the older style. Hard saying not knowing. If we could see the rear lights, engine, interior, or VIN, we'll be able to sort it out.

Confusing, yes. And doubly so when a manufacturer (like Jaguar) sells in so many markets...many of which have their own method of determining or assigning model year designations.

I'm not aware of Jaguar ever stopping production to accommodate model year changes. Everything was a running change as far as I know. XXX-changes incorporated into existing production...sometimes one or two at a time; sometimes many at once.

My (USA market) 1988 XJS was built in Feb 1987 but carried a 1988 VIN. For the USA market, and surely some others, regulatory/safety/emission compliance strategy can play a role in how a manufacturer assigns model year designations. And, no doubt, there are merchandising considerations as well.

Cheers

I remember when Jaguar began selling the X400 (X-Type) in May of 2001 as the NEW 2002MY car. Every market has their own laws on MY change-point.

It's a 2-seater not a 2+2. Strangely doesn't SEEM to have 4-spoke steering wheel, although has 5-spoke wheels? Everything points to it being a pre-May 93 car, rather than a later car with retro-fit earlier bumpers.

I have a 93 XJS convertible that still has the inboard rotor on the rear. Also has the older style bumpers.

Was it smacked in the front? Hood (bonnet) seems a different colour from the rest in the first photo...maybe rebuilt with the older hood and grill? That IS a V12 hood--no bulge. So a 6.0.

A lot of sun damage to the clearcoat on the bonnet/hood plus 2 sets of holes for a growler and leaper. I would say bumpers are original fitting and the car was manufactured earlier than '94.

Good spot Greg. That bonnet has been changed.

So it SEEMS to be a 2-seater V12 5.3 built between March 91 and April 93, with a pre-91 bonnet, and post May 93 wheels!

Unless anyone knows differently!

Also, the door handles are a dead giveaway. Only the early facelifts had the old-style ones. Compare to OP's late '92 with the flush handles.

My 94 6.0L vert was built in Sep 93 and the last 6 numbers of the VIN are 190256. The bumpers and outside rear view mirrors are body colored. See picture.
