Rear bumper

The XJS Rear Bumper appears to be a similar design to the X300 and X308. The cover has to be removed before the fixings for the three chrome trims (items 3, 4 & 5) are accessible:
The Locking Nut (item 14) will have to be removed from Beam Mounting/Strut Bolt (item 9) on both sides before the Cover (item 1) can be slid off.
Resident experts will either confirm this is correct or I'm talking rubbish.

That may be correct for the facelift bumper. But for a 1988 with the chrome and rubber one the whole bumper is removed in one piece and dismantled afterwards.
From memory - The bolts for the sides are accessed from the inside rear wings. The centre section has two or three small bolts/screws along the edge nearest the body which need to be removed. There are then the two main mounting nuts/bolts in the boot. You will/may have to remove the centre rubber to hold the other end of the nut/bolts.
The centre rubber is held on by lots of fiendish clips which are prised off - note, the top ones are a different size to the bottom ones which will save you some grief on reassembly.
Then using a helper gentyl prise the front of the side bumpers out too avoid hitting the paint and manouver then bumper backwards off the car.
The rubbers on the side are almost invariably rusted on and when you try to remove them the heads spin in the rubber!!!!
Edit - I may be a bit confused, The centre section rubber and support may not need to be removed to take the sides and centre chrome off, or is tha the front????? Try it without dismantling the two main nuts/bolts. If not then remove the centre part.

The rear bumper on a pre facelift is easy to remove, apart from rusted fittings being a problem.
Remove the carpet and ally cover from the back inside of the boot. Inside the boot you will see the bumper bar fixings in tubular outcrops. Undo the bolts and remove the circular cover under the bolts. Undo the rear fog guard lights from their brackets in the bumper.
Each side of the boot, outboard of the exhaust tunnels, there are fixings for the side rear quarter rubbers and their chrometops, often rusty and the bodywork they go through too. Undo these, there are three I think each side, maybe four. The whole lot will come away. Then you can pick apart the rubber cover, the chromes etc from the steel beam at your leisure!

Thanks guys.
Greg you confirmed what I had thought about removing the bumper in one go which is what I did with the front.
I do have a manual but does anyone know whether I could get hold of anything in PDF so that I can look at everything on my iPad.
First day on this forum. Thanks for helping a newbie...

i just took my rear bumper off this last week, for the rear on a 93 the chrome has to come off first then the center bumper cover in order to be able to take the two bumper bolts out of bumper shocks. and take the inner bumper off. if you are just removing the chrome then you can just take that off. and leave the center bumper bar and cover on the car. i found it easyest to unbolt the chrome from the body by the bolts on the brackets that bolt to the body rather than the bolts that bolt to the chrome. you will have to pull the carpet back on the inside to get to the nuts a air ratchet on the inside and a box end on the outside makes quick work of it.
