'85. Just had car painted and windshield and rear windows pulled out.

Glass guys got the windshield in with little difficulty. They have tried 3 or 4 times now over several hours to get the rear window back in. Right now the window is in, but they can't get the chrome trim back in. Anyone have any input?

I read in The Book where the headliner needs to sit inside a slit in the seal itself, and sometimes the chrome won't go back in. Think maybe this is the case?

 

Have to put assemble the chrome trim into the window gasket and then install the window gasket into the car using the rope method.

 

There is a channel in the rubber that the chrome trim sits in. Unfortunately I threw my rear window rubber away the other day so I can not take a pic of how it fits in.

But if you look at the outside of the rubber there should be a couple of flappy bits that the trim sits in. I would use plastic knife to get the rubber over the chrome.

 

Just to encourage you: It is a pig of a job. First of all, make sure the lip in the body is not damaged and that includes rust. Pls also be aware that there are some non-OEM windiws with a slightly wrong shape, they will never fit properly. Use sealer in the seal both against the bode and the glass. Remove inside trim on shelf and sides, rear seat, cover the rear edge of the roof lining with 10 cm width of masking tape to avoid sealer gunge spoiling the interior. Have a plastic box or similar to catch the rope with gunge on it. Fit the gasket to the glass. Be aware that the seals currently available are about one inch too long along the upper edge, cut out a section at the top and supeglue together. Some fit the chrome now, using supeglue to hold it in position in the seal which has lips for it as said above. Then the rope trick to pull it in from inside the car. I put in the glass/seal first. As long as you get it to seat properly it is fairly easy to fit the chrome afterwards. Use a pltic knife or similar to "lift" the edges of the seal over the chrome trim. Use a blob of glue to secure the corner trim in place. Then
