Removing Cruise Control
I have an 88 XJS and fairly new to owning it. I want to remove the cruise control as I don't want it or need it plus it will help clean up the engine bay. What can I remove without messing anything else up and what should I watch out for?
Simple enough task.
Remove the bellows nonsense, disconnect the cable, and tuck in somewhere down the side of the RH inner wing area (out of the way).
Unplug the vac hose, trace it back to its source, which should be a dump valve near the RH air cleaner backing. Either cap that vac source there, or remove that valve, tucking electrical thingy out of sight, and continue tracing the vac hose to its nect port and plug it there, DONE.
You will possibly find broken spark plugs, spanners, bugs, all sorts of stuff.

disconnect the plug and vacuum line, cap the vacuum line and tie strap together with wire. Then tuck them in somewhere out of sight. This allows you to find them easily in the future should you change your mind or sell the car. Then remove bellows and cable.
I never replaced the bellows after lumping my XJ wuzza six.
The vacum line did not get reconnected, not the plug for the solenoid.
The brake interrupt was used temporarily another purpose.
I've never been a fan of CC. I did install an aftermarket unit on a a past critter. Tinkering....
Past critters have had them, and on occasion, I used them. More like
"bells and whistles" to me.
Were I ever to revive CC, I'd seek a metal cased bellows or even an electronic device. They do exist, the particulars, I don't recall at the moment.

My cc never worked since I had the car fire to a bad cable. I removed the bellows to change plugs and wires, just capped the vac line and didn't put the rest back. Taking that bellows off was about the easiest part of doing the plugs. I don't know if the vac line even needs to be capped as it's controlled by that solenoid. Anyhow, it should be pretty easy for you, and as others said, a good chance to find other problems or lost items.
