Repair operations Manual: Is it just me or is this manual a tad ambiguous
You guys have much luck using your ROM? Every time I try to find something in that manual its like trying to find a needle in a haystack. I admit Im new to the game but it seems like the supplements ( researching my speedo for my 85 XJS HE) are ambiguous and haphazard....or is it just me?
Thoughts? Experiences?
Kirby Palm time i guess...should of thought of that earlier lol!

Most of the Jag repair literature is terrible....and I'm quite sure that this has contributed to the poor reliability/repair reputation of the cars.
OK, OK....maybe 'terrible' is a bit harsh but I've seen much better from most other manufacturers and 'as bad or worse' from only a couple. I've started to just dabble a bit with some Ferraris and that literature is frustratingly poor as well.
Perhaps some of the original multi-volume Jaguar manuals were better. What we can buy nowadays are compilations which appear to be haphazardly condensed at a times.
Often there is little or no diagnostic information for various sub-systems. Great boring detail on removing xyz-widget from the car but absolutely zero info on how xyz-widget works or how to test it.
However, if you assemble a full library of technical literature for any given model--- the ROM itself, the tech service bulletins, the new model intro guides, the training manuals, etc---you'll find that a great many of the gaps are filled in.
I could ramble on and on.....
Obviously the internet is a great boon. I'm sure many more people know much more about XJSs (for example) than 20 years ago.
Cheers

Idk about the newer cd versions, but I have no issue finding things in my service manuals. There is a table of contents and then another table at the beginning of each sub-system, so it is usually pretty easy to track down.
Something you kind of just have to find a knack for is learning the keywords as spoken by the british or even just technical literature compared to what we usually speak. AC is more often climate control and a brake booster is more often called a servo assist or power brakes. Stuff like that

Having a physical book with a lot of bookmarks makes it a lot less tedious. You do need the online manuals for zooming in, searches etc.
If you search eBay a good priced one occassionally shows up
