There will be the VIN/compliance sticker somewhere in the door jamb ( I think it's by the top hinge of the drivers door) and that will tell you the build date and the colour codes.

The date is usually a month and year, not a specific day. I'd expect to see 7/88 for example to mean July 88. If you see other dates on things, particularly the Lucas electrical parts like 3788 that means the 37th week of 1988.

But the car was picked up by the orginal owner on may 26 1988 so being built in march makes sense.

Once I get the transmission shift linkage back together and can get the car outside to wash the engine bay maybe I'll find more numbers lol.

I bet the sticker actually says 3 / 88 then, not 3788, i.e. built in March 88. Sometimes cars can sit for a while too, I had a 1995 Vanden Plas that sat on the dealers lot for a year before being sold.

You can get a Heritage certificate from Jaguar Heritage confirming exact build date, despatch date, engine, gearbox numbers etc etc.

Yes, the sticker indicates the build date as March 1988.

Lol. I might take the day off. Perks of the job is when you are out the door often , when you are home you get lots of time off. Or I wait till everyone is in bed lol.

I either have time and no money or lots of money but no time haha.

Not unless it fouls something. Easy to fix or make one if it does, though. But look carefully at the relative lengths between the two holes. This MUST be the same as the old one, or the selector will not be able to move the cable to the correct place, and the gear engagement will not sync with the selector detents.

I didnt remove the current bracket from the tranny anyways so I'll probably just reuse it. This part came off a 85 xj6 so the maybe the routing of the cable was a little more offset.

After this just gotta top up the coolant and then get it out of the garage to clean the engine bay up as best I can before the real fun begins lol

It's a different transmission in the XJ6, that's a Borg Warner 66 as opposed to the GM TH400.
