ive seen many threads and images of xjs owners moving from their stock 15 or 16 inch wheels to an 18 inch wheel. many of these owners also move to a 30 or even 25 section width tire in order to maintain total tire/wheel diameter/circumference.

while providing even more significant rigidity in the handling characteristics of the wheels/tires, these short-short sidewall tires may detract from the aesthetic appearance you are looking to achieve.

in order to minimize this "wagon-wheel" look on my car, with a set of 18 inch wheels, i have gone with 235/45-18 tires. the overall diameter is 0.2 inches taller than the 235/60-15s originally on the car (26.3" vs 26.1") but i appreciate the extra rubber. and i have actually noticed my speedometer matches more closely with the police radar speed notifications with this new set.

these are quite aggressive with regard to rubbing on the fenders (a few millimeters on the rear, and definite rubbing on the inside of the fender at full travel) but you may want to test fit some options before deciding on a purchase.
For this very reason is that I think 17" and 18" is really the limit for older model Jags. The 17" XK8 Revolvers on my XJS look correct in every aspect and beautiful, otherwise. The stock 18" Asteroids on my XJR were a great choice by Jag designers. I don't know if a size larger would look OK on either car, although I think I've seen XJS' with what appear to be 18" wheels and looking fine. I also believe that spoke wheels may contribute to worsen a little the waggon-wheel effect. With aftermarket rims is easy to jump from the sublime to the ridiculous in just one step, especially with a Jag...

Cheers

Corrosion is no problem. The edge is technically just bare aluminium and it doesn't seem to rot. My XJS stod outside this winter in rain snow and co and the rims are fine... A bit of metal polish and fine

They are factory polished... I've seen a few... Most get sprayed silver after being curbed.

Cheers,

Pic "C" is mistakingly named "1990"; obviously it is not.
The dark-colored car in front of the hedge row has the best looking wheels I've ever seen on an XJS. Wow. See post #37

When you expand (click on) the pictures you can see names. So, is it the "Probably 18" or the "Honolulu lump"?

I like the look of the 15" factory lattice wheels on the pre face lift XJS and the factory chrome 16" 5 spoke on the face lift.

I think the Jaguar wheel in pic "S" looks great as an easy, sporty upgrade from lattice, and these are what I was planning on getting for my first car, before I picked up my second XJS. In fact, I'd bookmarked that very car here:

XJS Jaguar Black | all Jaguar images

My new car came with aftermarket 5-spokes (Moda R8) that actually look pretty good. Not what I would have picked out, but I may keep them anyway. When I get the car running and cleaned up, I will pitch in a good pic for this thread.

i think the original 15 inch lattices looked great also, but the sourcing of tires, and the added handling benefit from shorter sidewall tires pushed me to find a larger diameter wheel. i even think 18 might be a bit much for the XJS, and wouldve preferred 17s, but i couldn't find anything i liked that had the right fitment for reasonable moneys.

(i'm also not one for using his xjs in the standard fashion)
I was just taking another look at your kitty with the Asteroids and I really think they look awesome. I don't believe that they're one bit much, to the contrary, the car looks perfect and well balanced with the Asteroids. In fact, if I remember well, I had just posted that I thought I had seen an XJS with 18" wheels and that they looked fine; well, it was obviously yours...

Have you seen the picture of Brit race pilot Gail Hill's blue XJS that I previously posted on this thread? It has the XJR 18" Asteroids on it, just like yours.

Cheers,

I have a set of Starfish and lattice. I'm running the 15" starfish rims on mine. I feel it gives a muscle car look that I prefer. The lattice rims have a classy look. Not my car.
I'm having the Starfish rims widened 2.5-3".

I put a set of Milan 18" on mine. I think this wheel is the coolest of all the genuine wheels.
I have thought 18" rims are a bit too large for an XJS but I can't help putting on them :P

Here is mine, sporting 17" Lamina wheels from an XK8. Laminas were options on early XK8's at the same time as Revolvers. I did have to get creative to fit the center caps up front. Revolvers center hub opening protrudes a bit more than these, so the cap got fouled on the dust cover. Anyway, a little RTV solved that!

I also included a pic of the re-done console with cupholders in place of the ashtrays.

I have always thought the Lamina is a perfect wheel for XJS, but I couldn't fine any in Japan. That looks really good!

Perhaps almost borderline in size, but those Milan's still look great on that XJS. In addition, whatever sports elements an XJS may conceal, those rims sure bring'm all out, plus they really seem to clean up the lines of the car for some reason.

Those shiny chrome Lamina's look pretty striking.
The wood, did you refinish it yourself? It's really an awesome finish.

The console was done by BritishAutoWood. Saul Chaplin. Does great work.
Dr.Scientist: I don't think it's weird at all.
